Non Profits Work for Housing in South Shuswap

By Barbra Fairclough

Attainable Housing Development Society (AHDS), a charitable society, is working to “fill the gap” in attainable housing by focusing on the capitalization, development, and delivery of attainable housing for all people. Their mission is to identify residential real estate in which long term intrinsic value can be created that will contribute to the betterment of the communities they serve.

AHDS is working collaboratively with all levels of government and in communities, as well as other non-profit housing organizations and service providers, and First Nations, and they are active in the South Shuswap.

Bill Miller, CEO Project Development of the AHDS describes attainable housing as “Housing that is affordable to those earning Area Median Income, meaning the need to spend no more than 30% to 34% of their income on housing costs. The types of housing included in the category of attainable housing may consist of single-family dwellings, condos, strata units, and apartments.”

Bill also noted “There is an increasing lack of attainable housing in many local communities and throughout BC with more and more people priced out of their local market.”

Affordable housing in contrast is affordable housing priced below market value and typically requires no more than a maximum 30% of a household’s monthly income to buy, subsidies are generally provided by the government to lower the costs that occupants need to pay for affordable housing.

The Housing Society of the Shuswap is a newly active nonprofit organization and is currently looking for best options to provide housing for all people in the rural areas in the Shuswap. The operational area includes regional district Areas C, D, F, G. Currently there are 6 board members and there will be more information available in weeks and months to come.

AHDS is working with the Sorrento and District Housing Society in the development of an additional 32 independent living seniors’ residences to the existing 16 units at Lions Manor in Sorrento. Sorrento and Area Housing Society confirms they are working through different stages of project planning with the AHDS.
