Rural Housing Society Seeking Projects

By Barbra Fairclough

The Rural Shuswap Housing Society (RSHS) was activated in April 2023 to explore foundational actions for affordable and attainable housing in rural Shuswap.

The RSHS is committed to owning buildings and managing housing for the future. The most immediate housing needs are being supported by Shuswap Economic Development (SEDS) through the Rural Shuswap Housing Society.

In the South Shuswap, the RSHS is in the exploratory stages of a potential 2-acre project in the Blind Bay area. Details are being reviewed and the project timeline for development is anticipated to be fully realized in the spring of 2024.

“One goal of the Society is to seek a continuum of housing in the rural Shuswap, “stated Sue McCrae, Chair of the Society. “Individuals’ needs for housing change over time. These needs will be supported through a plan which identifies gaps, and solutions are designed to address the evolving complexities of the greater community”, stated McCrae.

Affordable housing was identified as one the top three priorities in SEDS strategic plan.

The Rural Shuswap Housing Society serves the following areas. South Shuswap areas C and G, North Shuswap area F and Falkland, Silver Creek and area, area D. The RSHS board includes 3 of SEDS directors and the Executive Director.
